Can your emotions interfere with your intellect?

Ok so i did not so well in highschool, like i barely made it and had severe depression and all kinds of other mental health issues, however every one seems to tell me i'm so smart, but if i'm so smart then why was it hard to get through school? so can your emotions or maybe perhaps if your mentally ill can that affect your performance in school? i feel like im stupid.
