How to determine degrees of freedom in a chi square test?

To find the degree of freedom you take the number of groups you were testing and you subtract it by 1. It doesn't matter is "aa" was eliminated down the line, if you used that in your case study previously, it stays. If you have data written down for that specific group, it stays. So you tell me? I would say, your DOF is 2.
